teutonic tectonics

One was the exploitation of the state's own resources, particularly the woodlands that had once been princely domains. Just as the painters and writers embarked on their love affair with the German forest, officials began to insist on the scientific management of a valuable resource that had been ravaged by overcutting in the war years. The pine forest of the late Romantic imagination was a creation of nineteenth-century forestry officials, who liked the quick growth of foreign imports like Douglas firs.
